How did you get started in your business?
I served over 22 years in the Armed Forces and I decided it was a good time to do something totally different and see if the management skills I had developed over the years could be transferred into the wider world of civilian life.
One of the quick ways to get into business is to buy a lease for a public house, which I did on the outskirts of York. It did not take long to realise that this is a business which, if not done correctly, could lose you a lot of money over a very short period of time.
After 6 years of running the business and achieving many accolades and becoming the chairman of the local LVA, it was time to sell up and move onto the next challenge in life.
Over many years I have been involved in transport and logistics at all levels, working with many industries. During this period of time I held 2 senior management roles and 2 directorships, so with the combined experiences of the Armed Forces, transport and logistics and running a public house, it was time to put all these skills into one pot and start a new venture.
The new venture which I decided upon was recruitment and training. Knowing the qualities that companies look for and the problems the companies have to get what they want, I decided to launch Pro Active Recruitment and Training Ltd.
When I designed the company, I wanted it to be different to other recruitment companies - starting with the quality of my staff and the high standards of professionalism I expect, right through to the potential candidates. My rule of thumb is: would I have taken them on when I was on the other side of the desk?
